The Gullah People came from various areas of Africa, which included Senegambia, Windward Coast, Gold Coast, Angola, The Bight of Benin, Bight of Biafra, Mozambique, Madagascar, Congo, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and other areas of the continent of Africa. In the Lowcountry of South Carolina, the Gullah people survived the Middle Passage to America as enslaved Africans who were captured from the rice-producing regions of West Africa. In the Sea Islands of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, they lived in isolation. Because of isolation, they were able to maintain the Gullah language. This Gullah experience will take the visitor to the heart of the rich African American culture, and bring alive a part of ancestry that they will never forget!
