Step Back in Time...

As you enjoy our historic tours of St. Helena Island.  Our tours are narrated by entertaining, enthusiatic guides well versed in the island's rich history.

There is no better way to discover the traditions of the island's rich African American culture than with on site recollections and stories rich in cultural history.

Due to isolation from the mainland, the people of the Sea Islands developed a distinct language and culture of their own. 

The roots of the Gullah speaking people have been traced back to the West coast of Africa, and much of the African "rice coast" culture survives today in the crafts (sweet grass baskets), the language (Gullah, which is still spoken by many of the native islanders), and the foods (gumbo, lowcountry boil, and hoppin n' jon).

The Oaks Plantation House


On our tour you will experience...






Penn Center & Museum
- established by Abolitionists in 1862, the Penn School was the first school in the South to educate "newly freed" slaves;

Brick Baptist Church - built by African slave labor in 1855, "Brick" is the oldest Baptist church on St. Helena Island;

The Oaks Plantation - this plantation was used for the growing of the Sea Island cotton and other major crops during the Slave Trade;

A Praise House - built on the grounds of the plantation, these were small slave dwellings that were converted into places of worship for the slaves.
